Are you looking to enhance your PACU clinical competency skills, assessment and intervention strategies, communication skills, critical thinking, knowledge and integration skills? This year's 15th Annual Perianesthesia Nursing Update seminar utilizes the COPA (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment) educational model to provide the participant with the knowledge and ability to effectively manage a variety of clinical situations in the PACU. Utilization of Turning Technologies, Audience Response System™, an interactive audience participation system, will be utilized again this year to provide program participants with the ability to integrate practice-based outcomes and performance assessment of their own clinical competencies. This innovative and interactive teaching strategy received outstanding reviews from last year's attendees. Turning Technology™ audience response system allows the perianesthesia participant the ability to review and anonymously select treatment and intervention strategies based on PACU case scenarios presented by program faculty. Group data is then gathered and followed by in-depth rationales provided by the speaker at the conclusion of the clinical case scenario.

Be sure to join us this year and participate in a wide range of pertinent Evidence-Based PACU topics including:

  • Acute Pain Management Strategies for the Chronic Pain Patient: Nearly 90% of Americans 18 or older suffer with pain at least once a month and 50% of Americans 65 or older suffer with pain on a daily basis. As patients take more medications for chronic pain management on a daily basis, postoperative pain management becomes more challenging. This module focuses on effective acute pain management strategies to manage the patient with a chronic pain syndrome while in the PACU for an elective or emergent procedure.
  • In the Interest of Patient Safety - Managing Patient Crisis in the PACU: Managing acute perianesthesia critical events in an environment that has become fast paced due to increased volume and acuity requires awareness of the anatomic, physiologic, pathophysiologic and treatment options available to treat PACU patient emergencies. Presented in clinical case scenario format, this module features a comprehensive review of PACU treatment protocols based on best practices which promote optimal outcomes during a variety of perianesthesia emergencies.
  • Are You Serious - Perianesthesia Patient Handoff(s): A National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG.02.05.01), JCAHO requires 'organizations to implement a standardized approach to hand-off communications'... How serious has your anesthesia dept./facility been about changing their protocol/behavior(s) to improve this vital process? This module addresses handoff standards, required communication strategies, barriers to effective communication and high reliability organizations (HROs) policy and procedure review for effective handoff implementation in your unit/dept.
  • Perianesthesia Considerations for the Robotic Surgery Patient: The challenges associated with managing the patient presenting for robotic surgery are considerable and do not end in the operating room. Postoperative positioning issues, physiologic disturbances, fluid management and the perianesthesia implications of patient care are featured in this module.
  • 'The Outpatient' - One Size Does Not Fit All: Depending on the provider, outpatients are managed in a variety of ways. This module features best practices managing the outpatient during the preop, periop and postoperative phase of patient care and particularly their implications for the phase I or phase II nurse providing postoperative outpatient care.
  • Contemporary Issues in PACU Practice: This networking session features an open forum question and answer period for the PACU nurse/nurse manager that engages program faculty and the audience with focused questions and answers confronting us every day in perianesthesia practice.
