Course Content
This year's moderate sedation/analgesia workshop utilizes active learning strategies including ‘clinical case vignettes’ and ‘open forum discussion’. The ‘clinical case vignettes’ utilized will simulate real-life clinical situations that finish abruptly. Our featured speaker analyzes each ‘clinical vignette’ with the audience suggesting appropriate clinical management based on current standards, guidelines, policies and best evidence for practice. This teaching methodology is particularly effective in the analysis and remediation of clinical, interpersonal, and technical scenarios that surface in your everyday sedation practice but are difficult or dangerous to reproduce.
Benefits of ‘clinical case vignettes’ teaching methodology includes a systematic approach to improving the nature and quality of sedation patient care. The sedation setting can be an emotionally, technically, and cognitively stressful environment where quality decision-making is critical. Our featured speaker will provide seminar participants with in-depth analysis of a variety of pharmacologic, emergent, presedation, procedural and postsedation ‘clinical vignette’ scenarios which offer alternative approaches to clinical patient and situation management.
This year’s “Critical Analysis of the Practice of Moderate Sedation/Analgesia” conference also focuses on the following JCAHO 2009 National Patient Safety Goals:
Goal #2: Improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers
Goal #3: Improve the safety of using medications
Goal #16: Improve recognition and response to changes in patient condition
Whether you are an experienced practitioner or new to the sedation setting this year’s “A Critical Analysis of the Practice of Moderate Sedation/Analgesia” will meet your educational goals and objectives.

Before becoming a CRNA, Cindy spent over 20 years working as a staff nurse and clinical coordinator in the ambulatory surgery unit and sedation setting for invasive procedures. She has been actively involved in policy development, continuous quality improvement programs, and JCAHO/Department of Health inspection readiness programs. Cindy is an active member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. She directs simulation technology activities for students utilizing a computerized, interactive simulation manikin thus enhancing didactic knowledge, critical thinking, and skill attainment through case scenario presentations prior to implementation in the clinical setting.
Michael Kost, DNP, CRNA
Michael is the Program Director of a nurse anesthesia educational program in a mid-Atlantic state. He is the author of two award winning texts on Moderate Sedation/Analgesia. The “Manual of Conscious Sedation” (W. B. Saunders) was the first text of its kind to assemble into a single source all of the information needed to ensure quality care for patients receiving sedation/analgesia. His latest publication entitled “Moderate Sedation/Analgesia: Core Competencies for Practice” (Elsevier Science) provides non-anesthesia sedation practitioners with all of the necessary competencies required to provide safe, clinically competent sedation patient care. He is a respected author, consultant and educator on a wide variety of topics including pharmacology, sedation/analgesia and patient safety issues.
